Cook County property tax appeal deadlines, fall 2026: what veteran homeowners should do now

Short answer

The Cook County property tax appeal deadline depends on your township. As of the Assessor’s Oct. 13, 2026 calendar, Chicago’s Lake Township closes Oct. 29, Jefferson Nov. 12 and North Chicago Nov. 24; Hyde Park closed Oct. 8. Suburban windows close between Oct. 14 and Nov. 23. Veteran homeowners should file an appeal if their assessment looks high and, separately, confirm that their veterans exemption is on the bill, because an appeal does not add or replace an exemption.

How to file

  1. Find your township on your reassessment notice or the Assessor’s property search.
  2. Gather evidence: a recent closing statement if you just bought, sales of similar homes, or proof that your property record is wrong, such as square footage.
  3. File online with the Assessor before your township’s deadline. You do not need a lawyer or appraiser.
  4. Miss it? You can usually still appeal to the Cook County Board of Review when it opens your township. It charges no fee.

Veterans: check your exemption separately

An appeal lowers your assessed value. It does not add a veterans exemption. If you have a service-connected disability rating, confirm on your bill that the Veterans with Disabilities exemption is applied: $2,500 off equalized assessed value at 30% to 49%, $5,000 at 50% to 69%, and up to $250,000 at 70% or higher. If it is missing, file with the Assessor and renew it each year. Illinois and Cook County veteran exemptions.

Bought recently with a VA loan? Your purchase price is strong evidence in an appeal, and the homeowner exemption ($10,000 off EAV in Cook) should be on your next bill. Suburban exemptions.
